Hello there readers, and welcome to this weeks bearded installment.
I’ve been pondering of late how to end the bearded year of mine. I’m planning on shaving on 01/01/2010, maybe at a minute past midnight on New Years Eve, depending on where we are. My current thoughts are that I want to keep the neck beard, and look a bit like this chap:

Here’s an update of my photo. Taken in classy black and white on my camera phone. My phone isn’t up to much, and the colours were properly messed up, so I though grey scale was the way forward this week. This photo was taken by me, this lunch time, in my office in Bedford.

Welcome to a very special edition of the Beardie Blog.
This maybe the first of many, the first of few, or the last of one. What am I talking about? Good question! This weeks blog has been written for me by a guest writer! My good friend Nicko has stepped up to the plate and written the following blog for me. Hello beard spotters - it’s been another eventful week in the life of a full time beard grower!
On Monday evening I was sitting quietly ready Fly Fishing by J. R. Hartley, when there was a knock at the door. It was a strange old man sporting a grotesquely patchy beard and wearing an eye patch. “Are you a pirate?” I asked him.
“No, I’m a travelling beard salesman” he replied. “Can I come in and show you my beards from around the world?”
I told him that I already own a smashing beard and didn’t really have any more room on an already crowded chin, but as he was a fellow beard fancier I invited him in for a cup of tea. “I’ve sailed the fours seas, collecting beards from the seven corners of the world” he explained, taking some fine looking beards from his bag and laying them on the table. “Would you like to buy one?”
I explained again that my collection of beard was full when I noticed something strange about his beards. One of them had a head. “These aren’t beards” I cried “These are roadkill”. I was holding the flattened body of a skunk.
Without warning, this strange man leapt at me, brandishing a set of Remington beard clippers – my most feared adversary! With surprising strength and agility, the old man pinned me to the floor and brandished his deadly weapon at me. “Soon your beard will be mine” he shrieked, obviously overwhelmed with beardlust. I couldn’t let him take my beard – there was a lot of people’s sponsorship money resting on these whiskers and I couldn’t afford to lose a single bristle.
He thrust his shaving tool at my face – but as he swung to the left, I was able to use my well defined chin muscles to steer my beard to the right and he missed my precious facial hair. He launched at the right side of my face but again, my chin was too quick for him as I swung my beard to the left. Finally, he aimed a swipe down the centre of my beard but I parted it with ease down the middle using nothing but the phenomenal powers in my chinny chin chin – he hadn’t shaved a single hair from me. My intensive chin training over the last nine months had served me well.
I managed to overbalance him and knock the beard trimmer from his hands. “Don’t take my beards. Please don’t take my beards” he whimpered in a heap on the floor and he began to cry.
“I told you – I don’t want your beards” I said, towering over him, but I felt sorry for the man. I found an old furball that one of the cats had coughed up and gave it to him and I watched with disgust as he sellotaped it to his face.
“Thank you my impressively bearded friend” he said and I watched him hobble off up the road with his bag of dead animals before returning to finish my book on fly fishing. By J. R. Hartley.

Welcome Beard Fans to this weeks no Blog!
Time constraints and general life getting in the way have prevented me from blogging this week, or photographing myself, so in true internet style, here’s a red x, where there should be an image.

Firstly, I’ve reached to 60% mark in the fund-raising stakes. Many thanks to my Mum, Rose, for her unrelenting support.
I was doing some research today for something interesting to say on beards. This is the first thing I found on Google, and it’s brilliant!
Well, once you’ve recovered from that, moving on to this weeks photo my beardie progress. This week, I’ve gone for a profile shot. I don’t have a guitar growing out of my beard, oh no, that’s my daughters guitar, that I like to have a plink about with on occasion.

This weeks Beard of the Week was inspired by me watching TV on Thursday night. Not that he’s currently sporting a beard, Frankie Boyle did a stint recently as a beardie, and a very nice ginger example it is too.
Well, I’m approaching the two third mark, and I’ve just measured a beard hair that has moulted in this glorious heat we’ve been enjoying. It’s currently 9cm long (not that it’s particularly uniform in length), so if it continues to grow at the same rate, it should be approximately 13.5 cm by the end of the year.
I’ve done some Googling on “how to encourage beard growth”, and the general consensus is that shaving more regularly helps. Well I won’t be trying that in much of a hurry!

I hope you didn’t miss me too much last week - I was away on holiday. I had meant to get a guest writer lined up, but like a lot of things, I didn’t quite get around to it!
We had a camping trip down in Cornwall. We went as a group - us 4, along with a couple of my wife’s cousins, their partners and children, her Aunt, and a dog! We were camping newbs, and the “safety in numbers” approach paid off - we had a cracking time!
Belated thanks to Chris this week for his continuing support. Donations are very thin on the ground during August - I guess a lot of people are away on their holidays too….
This weeks photo is a self portrait, and was taken on Perranporth beach, just down the coast from Newquay.

This weeks sees the half way point in my bearded adventure. On today, Friday 3rd of July it’s 184 days = 4416 hours = 264,960 minutes = 15,897,600 seconds since I last shaved on 31st December 2008. That’s a lot of numbers - praise be for Excel!
With the greatly appreciated donation from Oakers, I’m currently 55% towards my fund-raising target of £500 for the Pasque Charity. With your support, I’m confident that we can get the desperately needed funds to this very good cause.
Moving on then, it’s been hot this week. Very hot. When I left my office on Tuesday evening, the thermostat thing in the car reckoned it was 37°C. Granted, our car park is a bit of a sun trap, but I’m surprised that my car tyres haven’t melted! Luckily, the beard isn’t too bad in the heat, although it’s definitely more challenging to apply sun cream.
I’m sure you’re busting to find out what six months of beard growth looks like, so here goes:

This week has seen the birthday of my lovely wife, Sam, who turned 21 again on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it’s been another quiet week on the donations front, but as pay day is approaching, fingers crossed there will be more news on the fund raising front next week.

Well, last weeks photographs of my haircut caused quite a stir. I’ve had comments coming in via emails, texts, and comments on Facebook. You can all breathe a sigh of relief that the photo’s were purely taken for fun, and I haven’t looked like a bowl cut monk for the week. Here’s the beard in all of its 163 days of glory:

Hello there Beard Fans, and welcome along to this weeks Beardie Weirdie Blog!
I’m in a good place with the beard at the moment, despite a lot of people giving me funny looks - I think a lot of people are suspicious of people with beards. I have no idea why!
Most people I talk too say something along the lines of, “Oooh, isn’t it itchy?”, well, no, it isn’t! The beard was itchy at the stubble phase months ago, but that phase has well and truly passed. Head hair isn’t itchy, and neither is facial hair, in fact, it’s nice and soft. It doesn’t take any more care than head hair - I shampoo it every other day, comb it twice a day, and if I feel like pampering myself, I occasionally have a sneaky pinch of some of the wife’s conditioner!
Speaking of the wife, many thanks to Sam for this weeks donation! I’d like to thank her for her support and tolerance of the beard - she’s not a beard fan, but she’s really on my side with it.
